Today’s DIY Question: Mike, the electrician, asks;

Hi Larry, I’m looking to buy an impact driver. I’m been an electrician for 33 years and use deck screws and lags to install service cable and panels. I also build decks. What is the best impact driver for my needs?

DIY Answer Guy:

Hey Mike,

Having so many impact driver’s on the market makes it quite difficult to choose, that’s why I wrote a this impact driver review on the Makita BTD142HW. I think it’s the the best impact driver for driving deck screws and lags — and for many other DIY projects too.

Milwaukee gets serious about cordless drill power

Apparently, racing pit crews need cordless drills with A LOT of power. And it looks like Milwaukee was happy to oblige as is shown in this funny racing pit stop commercial.

My only question is, “Where do I get one?”

No matter what the project, this compound miter saw does it all.

First, the Hitachi laser marker system that you can turn on before the blade starts and it’s easily adjustable to the left or right of your cut mark.

Next, the thumb-actuated miter stops allow for simple miter adjustments. And after you set your bevel angle, a micro-bevel adjustment knob provides precise angle adjustment for superb accuracy. The pivoting aluminum fence is 5–1/8 inches high making cutting crown molding a snap.

The powerful 15-amp motor provides plenty of power for any job, and the elastomer grip handle keeps all that power under your precise control. So, if you want power, flexibility, state of the art precision, and durability, this is the only saw for you. Definitely the professional’s choice.

Choosing a reasonably priced DIY compound miter saw.

Buying a miter saw is quite an investment, and can be a difficult decision with all the choices out there, so knowing what features you’ll need and which ones you’ll use the most is crucial to making a good choice. I’ve had several miter saws over the years and have come to know what features are important and most useful, that’s why, after careful consideration, my recommended choice is the Hitachi C10FCE2 compound miter saw.

This is definitely my favorite reasonably price precision compound miter saw for do-it-yourselfers. Control is the key to accuracy and the elastomer soft grip horizontal handle gives you that control.

Another essential feature is the thumb-actuated positive miter stops, these preset stops provide easy access to the most common angles you’ll use. As well, the easy turn/lock handle provides precise locking on those in-between angles. And the large extended flip fence raises to four inches, which allows you to accurately cut larger pieces, such as crown molding. The easy to use bevel adjustment adjusts up to 45 degrees, to the left, for precision bevel cuts. Plus there’s a convenient hold down clamp for securing you work.

As far as power goes there’s no compromise here. With the saw’s 15-amp motor and 10 inch blade you’re able to make crosscuts and compound miters with ease. And while you’re making those cuts, the dust collection bag catches most of the sawdust, and is very easy to empty.

This is definitely the best all around DIY compound miter saw. The saw comes with a 10-inch blade, extended fence, dust bag, vise assembly, box wrench, and hex bar wrench. And best of all, it comes with Hitachi’s five year warranty, for years of excellent service.

So if you’ve been looking for a reasonably priced compound miter saw, look no further, this is it. Enjoy!

The best gardening tool you’ll ever wear.

Whether it’s working outside in the garden or doing landscaping projects for my clients I inevitably spend a lot of time on my knees. This ends up being very hard on, not only my knees but my clothes as well. Over the years I’ve tried wearing knee pads, but they always seem to move from protecting my knees to getting in the way, or cutting off my circulation. I’ve tried using a closed cell foam pad but that too has it’s down sides too, like having to move it around constantly, or it gets full of dirt and mud thus soaking my knees and wrecking my pants. So what are the best gardening knee pads to buy?

Well, not to long ago one of my Master Gardener friends provided me with the product, that not only I was searching for, but what most gardeners, landscapers, and professionals have needed for years, and they’re called Green Jeans.

Green Jeans are, simply put, DIY gardening chaps.

They’re a pair of heavy-duty denier textured nylon chaps with built in knee pads. They go on and off over your pants and boots easily and quickly, and secure with easily adjustable snap buckles. Once on they’re very comfortable, they protect your clothes, and best of all the knee pads stay over your knees!

So no more wet muddy knees, worn clothing, or sore worn out knees. Just pure comfort and durability.

The sizing chart, for ordering, matches the exact location of your knees with where the knee pads are in the chaps. The chart also takes into consideration waist size and height, so you’ll get the exact fit you need. And, these knee pads won’t cut off your circulation.

Green Jeans will allow you a worry free time working outside, save your knees, and protect your clothes. So pick up a pair, and they will surely become your favorite DIY gardening tool.

The best cordless drill for the beginning DIY’er.

If you’re into do-it-yourself projects there’s one tool you must have, a cordless drill.

From hanging shelves, to building decks and porches the cordless drill is the tool to own for the beginning DIY’er.

As you may already know from reading other parts of my site, I’ve had a lot of experience with tools and have a knack for spotting the right tool for the project at hand. So today I’d like to offer my choice for the best all around starter cordless drill kit. The Hitachi DS14DVF3. Quite the long designation, hey.

When looking at all the cordless drill/drivers available out there what stands out with the Hitachi is all the great features for such a reasonable price.

Starting with the compact and lightweight design (just 4 lbs) makes it great for the Ladies, and guys with smaller hands. It’s that compact design which makes it very easy to handle, and easy to get into those tight spaces.

But don’t let it’s light weight fool you, it’s magnetic motor produces 300-inch-pounds of torque, and that translates into plenty of power to get through the toughest jobs.

It also has a two speed transmission which allows you to set the speed of the drill for precise control. For even more control the 22-stage clutch offers easy adjustments from high torque, for driving deck screws, to lower stetting for lighter less demanding jobs. For added convenience it has a keyless chuck, which allows for quick and easy bit changes, and a belt hook with an integrated bit holder. So no more searching for where you laid down that bit.

The Hitachi charger will fully charge the batteries in just 35 minutes, and you can expect about 300 charges over the life of each battery. No stopping in the middle of a project to wait for the batteries to charge. Of course, that would be a good excuse for a break.

The Hitachi DS14DVF3 cordless drill kit includes, a stand up flashlight (excellent when you don’t have an extra hand around), a seven-piece bit set, two quick charging batteries, battery charger, and a hard case for easy transport and storage. And to top it off, Hitachi’s 5 year warranty, guaranteeing that this proven workhorse will give you years of trouble free service.

This on duty emergency gas and water shutoff tool for earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, floods, disasters or other emergency can also pry open doors, and is excellent for digging through debris. Plus, it won’t rust or spark!

The DIY hobbyist best choice for cutting the curves, is an excellent jigsaw with all the useful features you’ll need to succeed with speed.

Having a nice variable speed jigsaw around the house or shop is great for cutting curves, notches, circles, and is also a very popular tool with hobbyist. So when I went looking for a reasonably priced DIY jigsaw, I found just what you’ll need in this Hitachi top handled model.

I like the top handle model, with the Elastomer grip, and D shaped handle, as it provides comfort and control. The ladies will really like this feature too, as many tools have to large of a handle to be comfortable and easy to control.

The top-mounted LED light makes for easy cutting in any light, and the powerful dust blower substantially improves visibility of your cut line. Both very important features when choosing a jigsaw.

DIY Tip: Wipe the top and bottom of the foot of the saw with a fabric softener sheet to help prevent dust build up.

The powerful 5.8 amp motor, and electronic speed control allows for easy controlled cuts in most materials including; including wood, steel, aluminum, copper, vinyl, and stainless steel sheeting. And all these features come in a jigsaw that weights under 5 lbs! Remember, less weight means more control. Very nice. Oh, I forgot to mention the tool-less blade change system. Just flip the lever, pop the blade out and replace. It’s just that easy.

With all these great features and Hitachi’s 5 year warranty you can be assured that your money has been well spent.

Here is why Festool is the professional choice when it comes to the best Jigsaws.

Wether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or professional woodworker looking for a commercial quality jigsaw, the Festool Trion PS 300 EQ is by far the best jigsaw you can buy.

When it came to buying a jigsaw for our high end cabinet shop, Festool made it easy. There’s no compromising here, just high quality and durability.

It’s 3-way blade guidance means the blade stays exactly at the angle you set. This means you can achieve precise bevel and miter cuts with ease. The non-scarring base plate takes the worries out of accidental damage to your projects. It sure beats taping up the base to protect your work.

Changing blades couldn’t be easier with Festool’s “fast fix” blade change. Just flip the lever, pop the blade out and replace, all with one finger. Nice.

The powerful 6 amp motor provides enough power to cut through 4–3/4 inch wooden beams, 3/4 inch aluminum, or 3/8 inch steel. Now that’s real power, and the cuts always come out straight and true. All that power combined with the variable speed control, low center of gravity, and ergonomic switch placement allows for easy operation, and precise results. I should also mention that the power cord is the twist lock type, and is removable for easy storage.

Dust collection is accomplished by three slots in the base that connect to the rear dust collection port. Using the splinter guard and chip guard are helpful not only in preventing damage, but also to assist with dust collection.

And don’t forget about transport and storage, Festool has that well in hand also, with their Systainer storage case. It’s made of extremely strong high impact plastic, and is stackable with other Festool cases.

So if perfection is your goal, look no further, Festool has you covered.

By the way, this jigsaw is also available in a top handle model at the same price.

For the do-it-yourselfer or professional this Makita impact driver has all the useful features you’ll need for completing your home improvement projects with ease.

If you’re looking for the best light-weight impact driver, here it is– the Makita BTD142HW 18v Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver Kit.

I’ve owned this fantastic cordless impact driver ever since it first came out, and use it commercially on a regular basis. One of the reason I switched from my cordless drill to the Makita cordless impact driver is less weight (under 3 lbs). Less weight means less fatigue, and wear and tear on your wrist and forearm.

But don’t let it’s light weight fool you, this impact’s variable speed motor has plenty of power (with over 100 ft. lbs of torque)! Now that’s enough power to get through most any DIY project. Plus, being only 5–3/4 inches long makes it so easy to get into those tight spots, and the built-in L.E.D. light brilliantly illuminates the work area.

Makita’s lithium-ion batteries provide two and a half times as many batter cycles as standard Ni-Cad batteries, and the rapid charger safely charges a battery in as little as 15 minutes. That means you’re always ready to go. If you haven’t used an impact driver yet, you really must give it a try.

These amazing tools can drive fasteners of all sorts, drill and even drive lag bolts with ease, and no more stripping while driving or removing screws. Plus the best part is less effort on your part, as this tool does most all the work for you.

The Makita cordless impact driver kit includes two 18V compact lithium-ion batteries, 15-Minute Rapid Optimum Charger, and hard tool case for easy storage and transport.

The travel case also has a convenient spot to hold a small case of your most used bits, and a built in holder for a standard keyless chuck.
For the casual do-it-yourselfer, traveling professional, or building contractor this is definitely the wise choice for the best cordless impact driver.

One last note; I do think Makita should consider incorporating a belt hook on next years model.

For DIY or professional electricians, the best digital multimeter is one that’s easy to understand, easy to read, and safe to use.

When you’re tackling any DIY electrical project, safety is the key. In order to protect yourself and your electrical system you’ll need one basic tool. A multimeter.

The multimeter will tell you, one, if there is voltage/current present where you intend on working, and second, how much voltage is present. Having this information will help you keep safe and facilitate a successful conclusion to your project.

There are many multimeters to choose from, but what’s important is that you have a quality meter that’s easy to read and safe to use. And, I always recommend reading the manual, just to be sure you really know how to use the multimeter on hand.

I’ve owned several multimeters, but have found the Craftsman digital multimeter an excellent choice because it’s so easy to use. It has an easy to read display, and an AC voltage detector pen, for checking voltage with one hand.

This multimeter measures all the basics — AC voltage, DC voltage, continuity, plus resistance, and diode and continuity. Having this tools in hand will give you all confidence you’ll need to safely succeed with speed.

A reasonably priced random orbit sander that has all the features to put a great finish on your home improvement projects.

Many DIY projects you’d love to do requires a sander. You know, the one you never bought because you thought you couldn’t justify the expense. Well, now you can. And don’t be surprised how many other projects you’ll want to do once you’ve learned about this great, light weight orbital sander.

I do many projects around the house; refinishing furniture, building bookcases, and making outdoor projects, so I wanted a reliable sander that would handle all those DIY projects and, of course, wouldn’t cost to much.

That’s when I came upon the Porter Cable 343K random orbit portable sander.

It’s soft rubberized grip provides comfort and control, as well as minimizing vibration. It uses hook and loop sanding pads, which allows for quick paper changes, and there’s an enlarged plastic hood over the pad, which allows you to get into tight corners without damaging the pad or your project.

For safety the automatic brake engages when you set the sander down. I really love that, as I always seem to let go of the sander to soon, and disaster strikes. And speaking of disasters and the subsequent clean up, clean up and maintenance on this sander is made easy with the removable cap. See more details.

The dual dust ports accommodate either 1 inch or 1–1/2 inch vacuum hoses, and the dust canister beats a bag any day. This reasonably priced DIY sander also includes a nice travel case for easy transport and storage.

This low priced, high quality orbital sander will easily meet most do-it-yourself needs, and give years of reliable service. Mine sure has. Thanks Porter Cable.

A proper right-handed circular saw with all the convenient features wrapped into a light-weight, easy-to-use package.

This Milwaukee right handed circular saw is my new favorite DIY power tool. I’d been using a 16 lb worm drive saw for years, but now, around the house, I’m enjoying the lighter weight, as well as the ergonomics of this saw. The ladies will love this saw too, as the tilt-lok handle adjust to most applications, making the saw very easy to control.

This saw is for right handed DIY’ers. Which means, with the blade on the left side of the saw you can easily see the blade, guide, cutting line while holding the saw in your right hand. This makes it much easier to cut a straight line, not to mention safer. The tilt-Lok handle can be adjusted back, for vertical cutting, forward for horizontal cutting, or anywhere in between.

The 15-amp motor provide almost as much power as a commercial worm drive saw and will handle about any DIY project, and in comfort. This saw also has an easy to reach depth lever and bevel adjustment. The bevel will adjust to 50 degrees, farther that most worm drive saws, giving you all the flexibility you’ll need.

This Milwaukee circular saw kit comes with a carbide-tipped saw blade, blade wrench, and hard case for easy storage and transport.

So if it’s time to get serious about buying an easy to handle DIY circular saw, look no further. This one will last you a good long time.
A left handed model is also available.

The best DIY sawhorses around. Finally, all the features you’ve dreamed of in a sawhorse, light weight, super strong, durable, versatile, and easy to store.
As far as sawhorses go I’ve owned many types. The ones you build with metal brackets, the metal fold up types, and many custom ones I’ve built myself, and they all had three things in common. They were all heavy, difficult to store, and cumbersome to transport.

The Stanley FatMax sawhorses had caught my eye in the home center several times before, mostly because they folded up so neatly, and they were very light weight, but the price always seemed a bit high.

After a while I finally got fed up with my old wooden horses and decide to splurge and buy a pair of Stanley’s FatMax sawhorses. As it turns out, that was a very wise decision.

These Stanley sawhorses are just the best. They fold up to only 2 inches wide, are very light, and easy to transport.

The individually telescoping legs make setting up on uneven ground a snap. The legs individually adjust about 8 inches each. From 31 inches to a total height of 39 inches.

They are also rated to hold up to 2500 lbs per pair, so they make a great scaffold base.

Plus, they have two 1 1/2 inch wide notches in the top of each horse to accommodate 2x4s to support planks for scaffolding, or your favorite work surface. I use a 24“X 60″ oak cabinet door as a portable work surface (also light weight and easy to store).

The built-in v-grooves are great for working with pipes and lumber, and the rubber feet prevent sliding on most surfaces. One often overlooked feature are the rubber pads built into the top of each sawhorse. These rubber pads help prevent your work surface or project from sliding on the sawhorses. An excellent touch by the designers.

And don’t forget the built in shelf for storing various tools while you work.

Believe me, these will be the last pair of sawhorse you buy, well except if you decide to buy a second pair, as I did.

Sometime when you’re working alone, you just need an extra hand. Irwin’s quick grip clamps work with just one hand so you don’t have to stop in the middle of your project.

I’ve had a pair of these handy clamps for years, and never stop finding more uses for them. In fact I just bought another 6″ pair just for my compound miter saw. They’re excellent for holding the saw in place, or anything else for that matter.

The clamps are made of high strength steel for durability, and the soft pads protect your project from damage. Plus you can adjust and clamp all with one hand.

Oh, and did I mention that you can reverse the ends to turn the clamp into a spreader? That little trick has that helped me out of a few jams.

These useful clamps are an extra pair of hands at your command. They come in various sizes to fit all you DIY project needs.
